Profile

Dr. Rauen grew up in Farley, Iowa and attended Western Dubuque High School. He earned his B.S. in Biology at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. In 2000, he moved to Iowa City, Iowa to begin his medical school training at the University of Iowa. He remained at the University of Iowa for his internship in internal medicine, ophthalmology residency, and fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery. In 2010, he moved to the Quad City area with his wife, Sara, and three daughters.

Dr. Rauen’s early academic interest centered on biologic research. He completed two research fellowships at the University of Iowa sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He also completed three research fellowships at the Mayo Clinic. In 2004 and 2005, he extended his medical school training to complete a molecular ophthalmology fellowship sponsored by the Doris Duke Charitable Research Foundation where he studied inherited diseases of the retina.

In 2006, Dr. Rauen was selected for one of the residency positions at the University of Iowa, one of the nation’s top ophthalmology training programs. He was invited to stay on as the cornea and refractive surgery fellow in 2009 where he studied the newest techniques in corneal transplantation, refractive surgery, and cataract surgery. While at the University of Iowa, he received many awards and was recognized for his teaching. As a resident in 2009, he received the ophthalmology medical student teaching award. While a fellow in 2010, he again received the ophthalmology medical student teaching award. The residents of the University of Iowa Ophthalmology Program named him fellow of the year in 2010 due to his mentorship and leadership qualities.

Dr. Rauen continues to publish scientific articles on the newest techniques of refractive surgery, cornea transplantation, and cataract surgery. He has performed thousands of laser and intraocular procedures. He prides himself on having completed training in the most novel forms of refractive eye care. His training as a cornea surgeon provides him a unique set of skills in treating nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. He is skilled at performing the newest cornea transplant procedures (DSAEK, PKP, DALK, and artificial cornea) and managing complex ocular surface disorders.
